As one of eight Vermont Free and Referral Clinics (VFRC), an important service we provide is to help our patients apply for health insurance. Since 2013, funded by a grant through the Department of Vermont Health Access, we have employed a Vermont Health Connect Certified Application Counselor to help not only Open Door Clinic’s patients, but all community members alike navigate Vermont Health Connect and apply for health insurance.
Our end goal is to enroll each one of our patients into an insurance program so that they may find or maintain a permanent medical home and primary care provider.

In 2024, Melanie provided 293 insurance consults, or appointments, over the phone and at our clinics. She enrolled 114 individuals in Medicaid and 113 in Vermont Blue Cross/Blue Shield and MVP insurance. She also had 577 follow-up conversations with clients.
